Mentoring Our Youth

The population that we serve represents over 15,000 students Brockton Public School students. Another 2,500 students live in Brockton but attend secondary schools within and outside the city. There are 77,439 students in Plymouth County Schools as a whole. The student racial/ ethnic graduation rate is as follows: Asian 91.7%, Black 77.3%, Hispanic 74.3%, White 83.2%, with a total average student graduation rate of 77.7%. That tells us that 22.3% of youth and young adults need our support and services. Over 5.4% of the student population is homeless or displaced. We are built to serve 22.3% in ways that address childhood ACEs and traumatic experiences for youth, families, and communities. In the coming 2023-2024 academic school year, The Umbrella Project will dedicate its resources and programs to the New Heights Charter School of Brockton. We conducted our first mental health event for parents and staff on Saturday, April 8th, 2023. This school has over 760 students in grades 6-12. Of these, 81% are at or below the poverty level. 42% suffer adverse situations that require clinical care monthly and some weekly. Focusing on health and wellness, and job training and employment, the Umbrella Center’s Young Adult Program connects youth and young adults from all grade school levels and college with experienced mentors, trainers, speakers who can provide critical education, training, and support in the areas of health and wellness, skills training, and employment resources, in a safe and nurturing environment.
